Finish #4 for August 2024 from Exuberant Color

This quilt is tricky to photograph.  If I use auto adjust in my editing program, it gives the pinks a blue cast so I didn't use it.

I don't feel the necessity to name every quilt but I have to have something to call it when I refer to it.  This one has just been Hearts and 4 Patches so far.  It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and it is 59" x 76".

I bought a couple big yardage pieces of pink prints for backings at a good sale price and this butterfly print is one ...

Binding time.......... from Exuberant Color

I have gotten into the habit of getting the quilts trimmed and bound shortly after they are quilted.  I looked for binding choices for this pink quilt and found 4 stripes as well as the leftover backing with butterflies.  The one on the right is too pale, second from right is used in the piecing and is at the edge of the quilt in a couple places so they are both out of contention.

I finally decided I liked the dark pink stripe because it echoes the darker pinks in the quilt so it doesn't look so pastel.

Then ...

Finish #2 for July 2024............ from Exuberant Color

Now that I have my 2 finishes for the month I can sit back and do nothing for the rest of the month.... wait...I don't know how to do that.  I need to be busy.

I made the quilt top in November 2023 so this one didn't wait too long to be quilted (by longarm friend Robin).  I did the binding all by machine which speeded up the finish.

Looking back at previous posts when I was making the top, there are at least 77 different Kaffe collective fabric in it, and 2 squares of most of ...

How about some red for Valentine's Day................. from Exuberant Color

I got the flannel quilt sewn together but didn't turn on the iron so I'll just talk about red today.  I went through my archives looking for finished red quilts and came up with this assortment.  My daughter owns the one on the bottom left and so far I still own the others.

This group is all quilt tops.  I sold the three on the left.  The one on the right will probably be finished soon.  I have the perfect backing fabric for it.

I think of these as mostly red.  The two on the upper right are ...

Racing to the end with 2............ from Exuberant Color

I started working early yesterday and got all of the top row blocks sewn.  I also have all of the 3.5" squares chosen for the bottom row.  I think I'm going to go ahead and sew this now and I'll add the bottom row to it when I get it finished.

I sewed the binding onto this small soft colorwash last night (only a portion of it is shown here).  I have had the quilting done for several weeks but couldn't decide which edge was the top and couldn't decide between a facing and a ...

Border blocks................ from Exuberant Color

The big fold up section at the back of my sewing cabinet is covered with green goodness.

I continued to design the border blocks with 2 sizes of squares and got all 20 blocks for the 2 sides of the quilt sewn last night.

Now I need to design and sew the 7 blocks for the top and 7 blocks for the bottom and figure out how I'm going to make the 4 corner blocks.  I also need to decide if the center blocks are in their final arrangement.

I cut the binding for a wallhanging that is already ...

Playing with green.................. from Exuberant Color

There will be about 76 of the 3.5" squares and around 228 of the 2.5" squares to form the border on the green Rosy quilt.

There were a few candidates for the smaller squares in the 2.5" strips box.

I really didn't get much accomplished yesterday, kind of a transition day from the super busy days to normal days.  I put enough of the new squares that I cut up on the wall to see I need some blue and a few darker green for some value contrast.  Because I am going to sew the border ...

June 2023 monthly recap.............. from Exuberant Color

One finish for June.  That makes 11 finishes so far this year.

I have been calling this one light Winged Square because I made a second quilt with all of the dark blocks.  This one is 46.5" x 70", a perfect cover up for an afternoon nap.

It has Hobbs 80/20 batting, light beige Superior So Fine thread on top, cream color Superior Bottom Line in the bobbin.

The backing is an older Philip Jacobs fabric called Blowsey, one of my favorites.

The binding is by Brandon Mably, one of the Kaffe Collective group.

There was also just ...

And on to binding................ from Exuberant Color

The quilting was finished a little after noon yesterday.

The thread color matches well, so well that I couldn't tell where I had already quilted.  It is definitely done by a human being, not a computerized quilting machine.  In fact my long arm is so old they probably don't even offer the computer setup for it.

I auditioned several binding choices and wanted one with some coral/pink if I could find it.  What looks like yellow or beige as the lightest stripe is actually a salmon or coral, then orange, and finally deep rose in the center ...

Use the pretty ones.............. from Exuberant Color

We finally got rain overnight Saturday into Sunday, 3/4".  That is the first rain in 5 weeks.  It turned cooler with quite a breeze yesterday.

My task yesterday was to find backings...and yes this is a pretty one.

I'm going to put it on the back of the Winged Square/Cut Glass Dish quilt which is mostly light colors.

Next was the backing for the Snail's Trail quilt.

The stripes in this quilt run vertical and the backing will be turned so the leaves run vertical too.  I should have refolded the top for this photo ...

Free day to dream.................. from Exuberant Color

I decided to make a collage of all of the pink quilts I have made from 2016 -2023.  This goes to prove there isn't just one quilt that can be made from pink fabric.  So many times I hear a quilter say I have (insert any group of fabric), what should I make with it?  My answer, choose the style of quilt you like and make it.  I prefer piecing.  Most of my applique was done by machine back in the 1980s, long before I had a blog.  What shape do you like?  Triangles and squares are in the ...

Top sewn.......... from Exuberant Color

It took 3 hours to sew this little 36" x 48" top together.  I estimated it would take me less than 2 hours.  It will only need one width of fabric for the back so it will probably get quilted early in May.  I'm thinking a light binding might be best because a dark binding would touch the points at the edge.  If I put a 2" light border on it a dark binding would work.  I have a few days to make a decision.

I finished reading the new Kaffe book I showed on this post.  There are ...

Enough blocks............. from Exuberant Color

I have enough pieces for a 36" x 48" baby quilt.  I need to rearrange them a little first.

There are 2 different kinds of rectangle triangle blocks and each twist block of 6 pieces uses 4 of one and 2 of the other.  Than means a lot leftover all facing the same way.  I need to make another quilt or use them for a border or something.  I love leftovers.

Have you seen the new Tula Pink neon prints?  I had to have a couple of them.  My photo of the pink elephants was washed out and the color ...

Another try............. from Exuberant Color

The center layout yesterday was most popular with the commenters.  Today I decided to try a half drop on every other row.  This creates a zig zag pattern between rows.

Compare the layout above to this one from yesterday that creates diamonds between the rows.  I have lots more sewing to do before I need to make a decision.

This will be another small quilt, most likely baby size or lap size.

The last 2 days have been gloomy and cold, like 40s cold.  I took this photo from inside.  There was a freeze warning overnight last night so maybe ...

What did I do yesterday?............. from Exuberant Color

I turned on the iron...that is a big event in my studio.  I either wait 5 days to turn it on or have it on for hours while I sew some days.  I pressed this wallhanging top and hung it back up on the wall upside down to the way I showed it yesterday.

Yesterday's photo as a reminder how it looked this way.  I like it both ways so that probably means a delay in finishing it.

While the iron was on I pressed a group of fabrics that I have been wanting to cut.

Also while ...

Two quilt tops........... from Exuberant Color

Pink Hearts is sewn together and measures 60" x 77".  When I made the 3 pink quilts 2 years ago I thought I was low on pink fabric.  Only about 5 of these fabrics are new.  I used batiks and Kaffe fabrics in with my other pink quilting fabrics so I would have a good variety.  I think there are 44 different fabrics in this one.

Weather Report Snail's Trail is 60" x 84".  I have a large piece of the lighter blue fabric for the back of the quilt.

I need to do the staystitching around the edge ...

Both tops are sewn....................... from Exuberant Color

Both quilt tops are sewn but not pressed yet.  I'll get them up on the design wall in the basement today and take their photos.  I'll have to hang them sideways and then rotate the photos because one is 78" long and the other is 84" long.  The design wall is about 83-84" tall and 96" wide.  My longarm is in the way to get a good photo when I hang them the other way when they are that long.

I was looking at what remained in the neutral fabrics box after I finished that quilt top last ...

Layouts confirmed........... from Exuberant Color

This Snail's Trail ended up with a scrappy multicolor look.  I put up all of the blocks and only changed 3 of them before taking down the rows and clipping them for sewing today or tomorrow.

I didn't take a final photo of the heart quilt and just took it down column by column as I was ready to add them for webbing the top.  I have all of the seams sewn in one direction and 2 seams sewn the other direction.  9 more seams to sew.

If you read my post yesterday I mentioned making another scrappy ...

Three quilts left my house............ from Exuberant Color

A couple of my favorite people stopped by yesterday and I let them choose some quilts.  This was the first one they chose.  It is 70.5" x 90".  It was finished in 2014.

This is the second one they chose.  It is 66" x 91" and has 120 different batik fabrics in it.  I always wanted this one to go to someone special.  It was finished in 2017.

This is the third one they chose, one of my very favorites.  It was finished in 2021.  It is a scrappy batik Bear Paw  with a favorite batik for the border ...

More pink............. from Exuberant Color

I was looking for pink fabrics that I haven't used yet and spied the pink paper fans by Kaffe.  The stripey print I used with it is one I passed over in the original search for fabrics but I'm getting desperate now for some new combinations to add to the mix.  The strips at the right are for 4 patches.  The 2 on the left have been used in blocks already.  I should have enough for the remaining 4 patches when I get these sewn.

Last night I sewed the 6 heart blocks but they haven't been ...
